Tutors For Children

How can I start a tutoring program for children?
I want to help very young children get a head start in learning how to read. Or help older children who might be struggling. How might I go about doing this?
I’m planning on doing this in the summer.
You might consider getting into Supplemental Educational Services, a tutoring program required by No Child Left Behind for failing schools. I am a provider myself, but am not a teacher (I’m a psychologist) so I can’t teach the children on a regular basis. It’s a lot of work, but we purchase tutoring materials, hired highly qualified teachers, and offered our services in local school districts. Each state has an SES application you can probably find online (or you can call your state department). Start up costs can be high, but it’s worth it and rewarding if done well. We serve about 90 kids this year, and it keeps me busy after a regular day of work, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

A Silent Minority: Deaf Education in Spain, 1550-1835 $0.33 This timely, important, and frequently dramatic story takes place in Spain, for the simple reason that Spain is where language was first systematically taught to the deaf. Instruction is thought to have begun in the mid-sixteenth century in Spanish monastic communities, where the monks under vows of silence employed a well-established system of signed communications. Early in the 1600s, deaf education entered the domain of private tutors, laymen with no use for manual signs who advocated oral instruction for their pupils. Deaf children were taught to speak and lip-read, and this form of deaf education, which has been the subject of controversy ever since, spread from Spain throughout the world.Plann shows how changing conceptions of deafness and language constantly influenced deaf instruction. Nineteenth-century advances brought new opportunities for deaf students, but at the end of what she calls the preprofessional era of deaf education, deaf people were disempowered because they were barred from the teaching profession. The Spanish deaf community to this day shows the effects of the exclusion of deaf teachers for the deaf. The questions raised by Plann’s narrative extend well beyond the history of deaf education in Spain: they apply to other minority communities and deaf cultures around the world. At issue are the place of minority communities within the larger society and, ultimately, our tolerance for human diversity and cultural pluralism. |

Balancing Principles Teaching PR $40.81 This book appears at a time when the crisis rhetoric about schools, teaching, and learning to read is extremely high. There is a rising call within the profession for a balanced perspective on reading. Balancing Principles for Teaching Elementary Reading aspires to help set the agenda for improving the quality of literacy instruction in the United States–by recentering the debate from What’s better, ‘whole language’ or ‘phonics’? to What can we do in reading instruction to prepare all children for the literacy demands of the next century? The authors, all members of the professional community of reading educators, work on a daily basis with teachers in classrooms, prospective teachers, clinicians, and tutors. Their goal for this book is to represent what they have learned about effective teaching and learning as members of this community. It is written with four purposes in mind: * to offer a principled conception of reading and learning to read that is considerate of both the personal dimensions of literacy acquisition as well as the changes that are taking place in society, * to summarize key findings from the research that relate specifically to effective teaching practices, * to describe current practices in reading instruction with specific comparisons to the principles of effective practice that are identified, and * to suggest an action agenda that is school-based and designed to promote positive changes in the quality of instruction. This text offers a perspective for teaching that provokes members of the reading education community to think about their underlying beliefs about teaching and their shared commitment to making schools moreeffective for the students they serve. It is envisioned as a resource to be used in building a community of learners–to be read with professional colleagues in a course of study, in a teacher-researcher book club, or in some type of in-service setting. Readers are encouraged to debate the |
